Some Answers to the WHY Question

WHY?
Why are many coin collection jar banks shaped like pigs?
BECAUSE
Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on.

WHY?
Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'?
BECAUSE
Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. If someone is said to be on cloud nine, that person is floating well above worldly cares.

WHY?
Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'?
BECAUSE
Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and theaters by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theater, a performer 'in the limelight' was the Center of attention.

WHY?
Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called passing the buck'?
BECAUSE
In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would             "pass the buck" to the next player.

WHY?
Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses?
BECAUSE
In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous.

WHY
Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left?

BECAUSE
When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since.
And now you know.

Today's AHA Moment

Wow, I'm having a wonderful Aha Moment day. Maybe you have heard of IFTTT to help with scheduling your social media post. I found out about it in a class I'm taking with Charity Preston. If you are using the program, way to go. If not, check out Charity Preston and what she can do to help you.

This program is going to free up so much time, I may be able to take a short nap after watching Jerry Springer. HaHaha, I wish.

I am learning the program and becoming more familiar with what it can do to help with my time management.  I will keep everyone posted on what I have learned and how it has helped me provide you with even more quality products, tips and money saving ideas.

Thanks again to Charity.

Conference anyone?

Oh Wow. It's time to start planning for the conference season. Whether you are attending a conference or presenting at a conference, it's always exciting. There are three important things that you may want to know if you are presenting or will have a booth at a conference. Prepare, prepare, and  prepare.

First prepare your materials.  Make sure your materials are current and up to date. Review your data and compare with current data.  If you are showing or selling a product make sure the product works and take more than one for demonstration. Lots of hands on a product can break that item and then what will you demonstrate? You don't want to explain how the product broke after only a few hours.

Second, have a second set of eyes look over your information. A friend or family member can do this for you. If you write it and you read it, then you will read over the mistake and never know it.

Third prepare yourself. A great way to become comfortable with demonstration or presentation is set up a camera and video yourself. Have a friend or family member operate the camera so that you will have an audience. One rehearsal isn't enough, do it a minimum of three times. This is important, view the video on a TV. If you see it on TV, it will give you a better idea of what you are doing. Once you have done that, make any changes and do it again 3 more times. By then you should be a little more comfortable and have most of the bugs worked out.

If you are attending a conference have fun and expand your network, push your comfort zone farther then you ever thought you would. Meet people and ask lots of questions. Most people are a little nervous at a conference. It is OK to be nervous and it is even better to be nervous and have a great network of nervous new friends.

Earth Day and Spring Time

It is finally spring and here in Florida it feels like summer already. Hopefully, everyone has adjusted to the time change, are enjoying more time outside in the evenings. Some of our favorite outside activities include gardening, camping fishing and boating. Even if you are just out on your front porch and watching the neighbors pass by, that is a great way to spend some quality time outside.

In many classrooms, students are learning about plants and plant life cycles in the spring. This ties in well with Earth Day. Students enjoy writing about what they would do to save the earth. We talk about recycling and re-purposing items, and we plant flowers.

Some of my favorite children's books about Earth Day are I Am Earth: An Earth Day Book for Kids by James McDonald and Rebecca McDonald. The Adventures of an Aluminum Can: A Story About Recycling by Allison Inches and Mark Chambers, and This Is Our World: A Story About Taking Care of the Earth by Emily Sollinger and Jo Brown.

Are you looking for some Earth Day crafts and activities. Check out our Earth Day Pinterest Board for lots of ideas.

Happy Earth Day!!
